RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION OF THE PASHASH COLLECTION

(In charge: Department of Metals)

Recuay metallurgy constitutes one of the unique developments of the Early Intermediate reflected in its technological and artistic style, which merits defining. Up till now, most of the studies of Early Intermediate metallurgy have been based on pieces coming from the Peruvian coast, especially the North Coast. We have research on the cultural developments of Moche, Vicús, Tablada de Lurín, etc. However, there is a great lacuna regarding the role of highland cultural groups in the metallurgic development of this period.

In the 1970s Terence Grieder excavated Pashash, in the highlands of Ancash, a series of gilded copper and copper objects associated with Recuay style ceramics. Shortly thereafter the material excavated was published, but the metals collection remained almost unknown in the storerooms of the MNAAHP until now.

This project, within the functions of the Department of Metals, proposes an integral strategy that includes research and placing value on the collection. Through documentation, technical analyses and recuperation of the context, we will be able to characterize the collection and place Recuay technology in the metallurgical development of the Early Intermediate. In conserving the pieces, their permanent stabilization and incorporation in the museography of the museum's exhibition hall of metals have been taken into consideration.
