WARI DRUM

Recovery of a Wari Drum from the Huarmey Valley

In 1934 the Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello acquired an extraordinary drum in the Huarmey valley, located on the north central coast of Peru. The piece was then put under restoration, after which it passed into the collection of the Department of Organic materials of the MNAAHP.

After seventy years, we evaluated the state of conservation of the piece and the need to intervene was determined with the aim of achieving the following objectives:

a.- To renovate the conservation and restoration.
b.- To register the manufacturing technique.
c.- To register and reconstruct its painted iconography.
d.- To recuperate the piece for public exhibition.

The drum is characterized by being covered with leather and decorated with polychrome designs in Wari style. The principal motif is a version of the famous "Staff Lord" characteristic of this cultural horizon and is composed of the central figure of a religious pantheon of the time (7th - 10th century A.D.).

Code of the Wari drum: MO-1713
