Transformation and new concepts of museology

From 1973 the museum has been directed by Luis G. Lumbreras, introducing transformations in its museographic contents and resources. Research was concentrated on the collections.

In that period, also, the idea dating from 1963 was developed of a projected construction of a new National Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. A situation repeated from 1981 to 1983, when it was finally paralyzed.

In 1988 the Museum of the Nation was created, installed in the former Ministry of Fishing and which duplicates the functions of the National Museum.

In 1992 the National Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology merged with the adjoining National History Museum, effectively occupying the old projected National History Museum.
